"You might think of a haunting as a loop of video or audio tape playing itself over and over for you to watch. Trying to interact with it would be akin to trying to interact with a show on your TV: sure, you can turn it off or change the channel, but I wouldn't expect the actors to suddenly stop and talk to you directly." - Loyd Auerbach

Hello everyone, and thanks for reading the GroveZine! It's been a fun summer for us. We had some friends come visit us at The Grove, and we did a few weekend getaways that were fantastic. One of them was to Ft. Worth, where our friends have opened a brewpub named "Neutral Ground" on Race Street. The craft beer there is outstanding - be sure and try the "King Cake" ale! You can get a "flight" of beers to have a small sample of them all. If you find yourself in that area, Stop by Neutral Ground, have a brew, and tell Stan and Angie that we said hello.

R.I.P. the Hamburger Store - although actually, it closed closed some time back. That was kind of sad - we have some great memories of past years at the place. Back in the day, you could sign a dollar bill and they would tack it to the wall. The entire interior was covered in dollar bills. The restaurant also had a wonderful reputation for their pies with the meringue on top piled high. Recently a new restaurant moved into the building - an Italian restaurant named "Roma's." We haven't had a chance to try it out, but we're going to dine there soon. I'll give you a report as soon as we do!

If you have a moment, I'd appreciate a favor for one of our frequent GroveZine contributors. You're familiar with paranormal photography expert Michael Graves, whose photos have been featured in the 'zine, and who is the go-to guy for analyzing photographs that have capture suspected supernatural activity. He's as big of a fan of the Crescent Hotel in Eureka Springs as am I, and he recently submitted a photo to one of their competitions. Not paranormal, but instead very peaceful and relaxing. If you wouldn't mind clicking on this link and then clicking the little green "Love this Photo" button on the lower right-hand corner, it would be greatly appreciated. Your name doesn't go on any weird email lists, and in fact, all that happens is the Crescent emails you a coupon for a stay at the hotel. You can (of course) simply delete it, but I'd recommend visiting the wonderful old place if you have the opportunity. The supernatural activity is strong there, and it's a beautiful place to stay. But in the mean time, help out a fellow friend of the GroveZine!

Okay, time for a few supernatural tales from The Grove. This month, I had one of those things happen that was very reaffirming. Two different ladies, on two completely different weekends, reported the exact same thing - without either knowing about the other. On one weekend, a woman came up to me after the tour and said, "I was standing there listening to you earlier, and suddenly I felt very cold - I looked down, and my arm had goosebumps and the hair was standing straight up! It then felt like someone was gently stroking my arm!" I smiled and told her that strange things happen at The Grove, and I didn't think much more about it. A week later after the tour another lady came up to me and said, "I didn't want to say anything at the time, but when we were in one of the rooms at the back of the house, my arm suddenly felt freezing cold, and I saw that I had goosebumps and the hair was standing up. It then felt like someone was lightly brushing my arm with their fingertips." I just laughed and told her that I'd heard the exact same story the week before. I wish that they'd both been on the same tour to compare notes, but cold spots and the sensation of being touched have happened at The Grove since we first got here... especially to ladies, so I believe we have a mischievous male spirit in the house.

I think that I've talked about this several times this year already, but we have a room in The Grove that occasionally has the strong scent of pipe tobacco in it. When it happens in the course of a normal week we just smile and shrug our shoulders, but on the tour, I'm hesitant to bring it up. We've never, ever (nor will we) ever set up anything to look like supernatural activity, so when the pipe tobacco happens during a tour I'm always torn. If I mention it, it would be such an easy thing for people to think, "Yeah, right, he just burned some tobacco in here before we came in." Therefore I don't even mention it - but a while back a lady stopped me as I was telling the stories in that room, and said, "Who smokes Prince Albert?" When I assured her that we don't smoke, or allow smoking in the house she said, "Well, my daddy smoked Prince Albert pipe tobacco his entire life, and I could pick it out anywhere." After that I went out and got a tin of Prince Albert and put it in the kitchen... but first I walked through the house, holding it up, and offering it to anyone who wanted it. The level of tobacco isn't going down, so whoever the pipe guy is he has his own special stash.

A book about Shadow People has been on my radar for quite some time - we do have some shadow activity at the house. A decade ago I went as far as to take a poll at the conferences that I was speaking at, and in the GroveZine, and gathered a lot of good information. I interviewed people who had seen them along with several paranormal investigation groups who had encountered them as well. For some reason the book has never come together, but maybe it will someday - it's always in the back of my mind. I thought about it the other day because I had my rolling desk set up in the den where I was working, and it was facing toward the front of the house. As I was sitting there working, some movement caught my eye, and I looked up to see a shadow person walking across dining room. It was just a fleeting glimpse, but I have no doubt what I saw, because I've seen that countless times before. So what are these shadow beings? I have no idea, but they have been seen by so many people that there's just no doubt that they exist. It's an interesting phenomenon, one that I find fascinating.

In the last GroveZine I announced my latest book, Strange Stairs and Secretive Steps. In the last month I've received so many emails that I haven't even been able to respond to them all. This was a fun book, and I wrote about all the stairs that I've seen and heard about along life's way, from secret stories of apparitions to intriguing tales romance and tragedy. And there are also chapters about stairs that I'd never, ever visit - like a historic pilgrimage up a mountain where hundreds of people fall to their death every year. No way, leave me out of that one! Still, I can tell you its story, which I promise will send a shiver up your spine.

The book is available on Amazon in both perfect paperback and digital form. I hope that you enjoy it!
