"I shall not commit the fashionable stupidity of regarding everything I cannot explain as a fraud." - C.G. Jung

Greetings from The Grove in Jefferson, Texas! It's been a busy month in town... The Burn Run Motorcycle Rally, the Texas Bigfoot Conference, the museum's Victorian mourning program "Sitting Up With the Dead - Revisited," the annual Taste of Jefferson, and even more. Usually I'm talking about the cool weather at this point, but it actually hit 90 degrees a few days ago! Oh well, I'm sure that we'll get there eventually.
Meanwhile, the Jefferson Historical Museum's "Sitting Up With the Dead - Revisited" took place, and was a huge success. All five performances sold out, and both the cast and the audience had a lot of fun. There were some laughs, some shivers, but it was all very interesting and quite historically accurate. My absolute, hands-down favorite part was getting to say hello to all the GroveZine readers that came. I sincerely appreciate all the support for the Jefferson Historical Museum, and all the very kind comments that I heard afterward. That photo that you see was some of the cast members with Rick Rowe from the ABC Network affiliate in Shreveport (I'm on the right). I had to get up a 4:00am to be there for the interview... okay, so there's one part of the production that I didn't necessarily enjoy - but we did appreciate Rick having us on his newscast!

There was a big announcement that was made in conjunction with the Texas Bigfoot Conference that was recently held in Jefferson. An officer in the Chamber of Commerce, Douglas Thompson, and our Marion County Judge, Leward LeFleur, both appeared at the event to give an official declaration that Marion County has been declared a safe haven for bigfoot. They're in the photo with conference organizer Craig Woolheater. You can watch the announcement by clicking on this link.

Also, be sure to check out all the Christmas festivities coming up in Jefferson. The KCS "Holiday Express" Christmas Train will be stopping here on December 2nd, there will be a down-home Christmas program with the lighting of all the trees in the Enchanted Forest, plenty of shopping throughout the season, and of course, the Candlelight Tour of Homes on the first two weekends of December.

If you've been reading the GroveZine for a while, you know that we sometimes have strange electronic things happen at the house. Recently a visitor to The Grove took photos with her phone during the tour. Christine sent me a screen capture of the photo gallery on her phone, and said, "Upon reviewing my photos on my phone later I noticed my photos of the parlor were all black. Except the last one which had a strange white, lace-like image. The photos before and after were fine. It might be an iPhone malfunction, but I use this phone for my site work for my job. So the operating system is updated often. I take hundreds of photos each month and this has never happened before. It is an iPhone 12, and not an old phone. I have had it almost a year now. I am all for finding a reasonable explanation. Please share this with your experts!"
Looking at the photos, this is puzzling. The pictures of the inside of the house that she took on the tour are fine, but when we got back up front afterward she took several photos of the Parlor - and when she looked at them later, they were simply black. At the time she had no indication that the photos were coming out all black. The last one has the white image that she described in her email. Everything immediately started working when she was leaving and took pictures of the front of the house. Very curious, indeed. If anyone has a technical explanation, Christine said that she would be very interested in hearing it. An enlargement of the "white, lace-like image" is shown below.

You know that old saying, "If only I had a dollar for every time that happened..."? Well, that's kind of my mantra when a lady feels ill on the tour. This literally goes back through all the years that we've been doing the tour. In the southeastern part of the house, either in the Dining Room or the Game Room, we've had people feel ill. 99.99% of the time it's a lady, and two have actually fainted. I've come to think that it's people who are more in tune to the supernatural world than they realize, and being in an active place like The Grove affects them. On a recent tour as we were leaving the Game Room, a lady said, "I'm feeling a little sick... I'm going to wait out on the front porch." I knew immediately what was going on, and I asked her to simply step out of the room and assured her that she would be okay. We walked into the Den - the New Room of the house (not added until 1871) and she felt fine. I'll bet I've seen this a hundred times over the years. There's just something about that part of the house.

A week or so ago, we had a tour and we'd just come into the house and were standing in the Parlor. After telling a bit of the history of the house, I told the story of the lady in the corner. She comes across as a very odd feeling when she's there. As soon as I explained that, a lady standing in that corner laughed out loud and said, "I JUST told my friend that I had goosebumps all up and down my arm when I walked into this corner - I even showed her!" Strange feelings in that corner have always happened... at least, when our visitor is present. I remember several years ago we had a group in the Parlor and there was a big linebacker-looking guy standing in that corner, with his much-shorter wife standing in front of him. As I talked about the history of the house, I noticed that he was quietly moving behind the crowd, away from the corner. I finally stopped and said, "Okay, I have to ask... why are you moving away?" He smiled sheepishly and said, "There's something weird in that corner!" I just laughed and said, "So you were going to leave your wife there?" We all laughed, but from time to time, there's a weird feeling in that corner of the Parlor - even on the tour.

We're just a couple of weeks away from the Fall History, Haunts, & Legends Paranormal Conference, so make your plans (if you haven't already done so). It should be a great conference, with an interesting slate of speakers and of course, the nighttime investigations. One of the things that I can hardly wait for is Greg Larson's presentation on "Messages from Mothman" - if you've read about the Mothman legends, this should be very interesting. Psychic/Medium Dakota Lawrence will also be having a special, add-on gallery event. There will also be a HUGE vendor room that you'll want to explore. I'll be opening the conference with my presentation, so be sure and get there when the doors open! For more information and tickets, check out "History Haunts and Legends Paranormal Conference" on Facebook... see you there!

Well, we're now heading into the holiday season - one of my favorite times of the year. Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and I always look forward to that. My wife preps the turkey and then sets it to slowly bake all night, so when we wake up The Grove smells delicious! We'll lounge around and watch the parades before the big feast, and by late afternoon I'm in the recliner in a turkey coma. There's just enough time to recover before Christmas arrives, followed immediately by New Year's, and then I guess we'll start the whole thing over again for 2024. Take care, and may the joy of the upcoming season fill your life!
