"I don't believe that ghosts are 'spirits of the dead' because I don't believe in death. In the multiverse, once you're possible, you exist. And once you exist, you exist forever one way or another. Besides, death is the absence of life, and the ghosts I've met are very much alive. What we call ghosts are lifeforms just as you and I are." - Paul F. Eno
Hello everyone! Even though we've had much more rain than we might like, as the old saying goes... "Spring has sprung!" The flowers in the garden are blooming beautifully. Several years ago we added the yellow irises that you see here; the bulbs come from my dad's childhood home, specifically from my paternal grandmother's garden. They've never bloomed like this, so we've really been enjoying them. It's so nice to see the property decked out in all the wonderful colors of Spring.
For the last few days I've been really excited to send this GroveZine out, because I had something happen that I found very interesting. One of the things that I talk about at the end of the tour of the house is how most supernatural things become quite routine to us. I know that sounds weird, but we get the same feedback from former owners of the house - it's not frightening, it's just part of living at The Grove. In fact, I've interviewed folks that work at other locations with supernatural activity like The Myrtles or Winchester House, and they say the same thing - "Yeah, weird things happen, but you get used to it." A week or so ago I had something happen here at The Grove that I'd never experienced in the house before, and I've been anxious to talk about it in the GroveZine when we get down to the "ghosts" part. Hold that thought for a moment!
We had the coolest thing happen on Easter Sunday. Without saying too much about our security system, we were alerted that someone had stopped in front of the house. I checked it out, and it was a golf cart with a few people on it... not an unusual sight in Jefferson. Happens quite often, in fact. They stopped, someone got off, and placed something beside the front gate. After they left I went out to see what it was, and found that it was a paper Easter egg, with a prize written on back. I brought it inside to show my wife, and instantly we realized what must be going on - it was an Easter Egg hunt around Jefferson! I quickly took it back outside, and put it exactly where I found it. An hour or so later we were speculating on when the hunt was going to happen, and I peeked out of the front window to see if it was still there - and it wasn't. Checking one of our cameras, we saw that a different golf cart pulled up, and someone jumped off and retrieved the paper Easter egg (you can see a capture from one of our cameras here). How cool! I'd love to hear the details of the hunt - we were delighted that the organizers chose The Grove to be a part of it!
I also wanted to announce that I just posted a new video to our www.VisitJefferson.com YouTube channel - this one is on Jefferson's Mardi Gras Upriver. It's a fifteen-minute video that tells the story of how the festival came to Jefferson, and what it's grown into today. It also has a picture of me in a kilt, which I think that I'm rocking quite well, thank you very much. Seriously, though, it was a lot of fun to put together, and is a look into the Mardi Gras celebration in Jefferson. I hope that it inspires you to attend one year, because it's always a lot of fun. Just follow this www.VisitJefferson.com link to check it out.
The Grove gets put on lists like this quite often, but I didn't see this particular one until a GroveZine reader sent me the link (which I greatly appreciated!). A travel blog put together the "13 Most Haunted Places in Texas" with an order in which to see them, and I'm happy to report that The Grove was #1! There are some wonderful places included in the list, such as the Driskill Hotel in Austin, the Hotel Galvez in Galveston (love that place), and several others. To check out the entire list, click on this link. I'm proud that The Grove is in such distinguished company.
From the time that we first purchased The Grove, there's been a security light out in the garden. We're told that Louise Young, who owned the house from the 1930s until her death in 1983, put it there because she kept seeing a man out in the garden. We've seen him as well, and he doesn't seem to be bothered by the security light at all, nor does he bother us. The security light is very bright, though, and shines in through our bathroom window - so we close the door to our en suite bathroom at night.
A week or so ago my wife had gone to bed before me - I was staying up to do a little work - and she'd forgotten to close the bathroom door. She later said that she noticed it as soon as she turned her bedside lamp off and was thinking about getting up and closing it. Before she could do so, the door suddenly slammed shut. I heard it, and went into the bedroom to find out why she'd slammed the door... but she was in bed, and the door was closed. We're not sure who slammed it shut - or why - but with all the weird angles in the house, that particular door doesn't close on its own. I told her to enjoy the fact that she didn't have to get out of bed to close it... apparently someone took care of that for her. To my knowledge, it hasn't happened before or since.
I love telling the stories of things that happen on our tours, but every now and then, something happens to my wife or I that is so out of the ordinary that we get excited about it. Such a thing happened to me on a recent Friday night at The Grove. I have a small rolling desk with my computer tower, monitor, etc., that I can move pretty much wherever I want to work. Most of the time it's in front of my rocking chair in the Den, which is where it was that night. The lights were dimmed in the Den and Game Room, but were on in the Dining Room and Front Parlor. I looked up from my screen, and saw a little girl in the Dining Room, and she was walking into the Parlor. I saw her through the open door, from the exact view that you see in this photo, and she looked as real as you or I do.
It took me by surprise because we've never seen a little girl in the house - only out in the garden. There has been a legend in this part of town about a little girl who lived in the Schluter House and died from some childhood disease. If you read the "Little Blond Girl of Sandtown" chapter in my Ghosts of East Texas, it has her story. She was even credited with waking the residents of the Hale House when it caught fire some time ago.
Long before we purchased The Grove, the former owner had a caretaker living here in a cabin out back. He looked out and saw a little girl running around the garden, and figured that her family was here to look at the house to possibly buy it. He dashed back inside and put on his shoes, and then went out to greet the family... although no one was in the garden, no cars were parked out front, and there were no little girls living in the neighborhood at that time (there still aren't, actually).
When I saw her I immediately told my wife, and she encouraged me to quickly go up to the front of the house and check it out. Everything seemed normal in the Dining Room, but when I walked over to the Front Parlor, it felt like there was an electricity in the air. The whole thing was something very out of the ordinary, and I enjoy encountering things like that at The Grove!
Well, that's the month of March at The Grove. In the next GroveZine we have some interesting things to talk about, including the eclipse, the History, Haunts, & Legends Paranormal Conference, and a ghost story from The Grove's days as a restaurant. I'm already looking forward to putting it all together for you - thanks SO much for reading the GroveZine... I sincerely appreciate it, and look forward to sharing the stories of the old place with you every month. Until next time, may you and those you love be safe, happy, and healthy!
